First Class Guide

What to Expect at Your First Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class

Walking onto the mats for the first time is the hardest part. Here is exactly what happens so you know what to expect.

The overview

Your First BJJ Class:
What to Expect

Your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class will typically include a warm-up, instruction on a few beginner techniques, supervised drilling, and optional live training. Most beginners have no prior martial arts experience, and classes at Carlson Gracie Inland Valley are designed to be welcoming and safe.

You do not need to be in shape to start — you just need to show up. Every black belt was once a white belt who decided to try their first class. Our beginner program is designed to meet you where you are, regardless of age, fitness level, or background.

What makes us different

Quick Answers for
First-Time Students

  • Do I need experience? No. Most new students start with zero experience. Our beginner program is built for complete novices, and our instructors guide you step by step.
  • What should I wear? Athletic clothing (shorts, T-shirt, leggings) is fine for your first class. If you enjoy it, you can invest in a gi later.
  • Will I have to spar? You choose your comfort level. Most beginners observe or participate in controlled positional drilling their first day. There is never any pressure.
  • How long is class? Typically 60–90 minutes depending on the program. Your first class will feel shorter — time flies when you are learning something new.
  • Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe? When taught properly and practiced responsibly, BJJ is one of the safest martial arts for beginners. Technique, control, and respect are emphasized at every level.

Preparation

Before You Arrive

Here is how to prepare so your first class goes smoothly:

  1. Arrive 10–15 minutes early — This gives you time to meet your instructor, sign any waivers, and get oriented with the facility before class starts.
  2. Park in the front lot — We are located at 32326 Clinton Keith Rd Unit 102, Wildomar, CA. Plenty of parking is available right in front.
  3. Bring a water bottle — Staying hydrated is important. We have a water fountain available for refills throughout your training.
  4. Wear athletic clothing — Shorts without pockets (or with taped pockets), a T-shirt or rash guard, and athletic shorts or leggings work great for your first class.
  5. Trim your nails — Keep fingernails and toenails short to avoid scratches. Remove all jewelry before stepping on the mats.
  6. Leave your shoes at the edge — We train barefoot on clean mats. Shoes stay off the training area to keep the mats sanitary.

The class

What Happens During
Your First Class?

  • Warm-Up (10–15 minutes) — Light jogging, stretching, and basic movement drills like shrimping, forward rolls, and breakfalls. These build the fundamental movements you will use in every class.
  • Technique Instruction (20–30 minutes) — Your instructor demonstrates 2–3 beginner techniques step by step. You watch first, then practice with a partner under direct supervision.
  • Partner Drilling (15–20 minutes) — You and a partner take turns practicing the techniques in a controlled, repetitive manner. This builds muscle memory at your own pace with coaching feedback.
  • Live Training / Rolling (Optional, 10–15 minutes) — If you are comfortable, try positional sparring starting from a controlled position. There is no pressure — observing is perfectly fine for your first class.
  • Cool Down & Questions — Class ends with stretching and a Q&A period. Instructors are always available to clarify anything or offer guidance on next steps.

Why it works

Common Concerns
New Students Have

Almost everyone has these worries before their first class. Here is the truth:

  • Am I too old to start BJJ? Not at all. Students in their 40s, 50s, and 60s train at our gym. BJJ adapts to any age or fitness level through technique and leverage.
  • Am I too out of shape? BJJ gets you in shape — you do not need to get in shape first. The pace is adjustable, and everyone starts exactly where they are.
  • What if I am nervous? That is completely normal. Every single person on those mats remembers their first day. You will be welcomed as part of the team from the moment you walk in.
  • Will I get injured? Injuries are rare in a well-supervised beginner class. You control your pace, and tapping out is always an option. Safety is our top priority.
  • What if I do not know anyone? BJJ is one of the most social martial arts. You will partner with different people every class and build friendships faster than you expect.

The benefits

Benefits of Starting
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

BJJ transforms your body, mind, and confidence. Here is what our students consistently experience:

  1. Practical Self-Defense — BJJ teaches you to control and neutralize a larger opponent using leverage and technique rather than strength. It is proven effective in real-world situations.
  2. Full-Body Fitness — Every class builds functional strength, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility without the monotony of a traditional gym workout.
  3. Natural Weight Loss — Burning 500–800 calories per session while having fun makes weight loss feel effortless compared to traditional exercise routines.
  4. Unshakeable Confidence — There is something transformative about learning to handle physical challenges calmly. That confidence carries into every area of life.
  5. Stress Relief — The focus required on the mats clears your mind completely. BJJ is often described as moving meditation.
  6. Supportive Community — You will join a team of people who genuinely want you to succeed. Friendships formed on the mats are unlike any other.

Building confidence that lasts

Beginner BJJ
Etiquette

Following these simple guidelines will help you feel confident and respected on the mats from day one:

  1. Arrive on time — Punctuality shows respect for your instructor and training partners. If you are late, wait for permission to join the class.
  2. Keep nails trimmed — Short fingernails and toenails prevent accidental scratches. Remove all jewelry before class.
  3. Wear clean gear — Always show up with a clean gi or fresh athletic wear. Good hygiene is essential in any contact sport.
  4. Tap early and often — Tapping out is a sign of intelligence, not weakness. It means you want to train again tomorrow.
  5. Ask questions — If you do not understand a technique, ask. Curiosity is how you improve. Every black belt was once a beginner asking questions.
  6. Bow when stepping on or off the mat — This traditional sign of respect acknowledges the training space and your training partners.
